For the last couple of years we seem to struggle with money during the Christmas season. I know that some things we can change about this and some we have no control over. I have two teenagers and as we all know, the older the child the more expensive the gift.
As I was worrying about how I can keep the Christmas magic going in my children’s lives, I decided to ask them about their favorite gifts from past Christmases. I was very surprised and a little impressed at what they had to say. They did not mention one expensive gift that they had received. Both said that their favorite gifts were the homemade pajamas that I make for them every year and let them open on Christmas Eve. The very gift that I thought would be least exciting, is the one gift that they look forward to. Every year I tease them and tell them, “I might not have the time to make them.”
This gift probably only costs me $4.50 a pair, plus a little time, to make. I get up at the crack of dawn on Black Friday and wait in line for Jo Ann Fabrics to open so I can get the flannel at $1.49 a yard! (I have to admit that I enjoy being there at the crack of dawn to begin the hunt for the print that fits their personality.) The last couple of years I have only made them the pajama bottoms and purchased a nice long sleeved cotton top to match. So it really does not take me very long to sew them.
Knowing my kids love their Christmas jammies takes away a lot of the stress that I experience at this time of year. (Now do not worry, they both will have one “big” gift to open this year and just maybe some pajamas to open on Christmas Eve. shhhhh)
